4 Bivalves (Sphaerids and others)

Most – and the largest – of native Kansas bivalves belong to the family Unionidae – the Unionid mussels. The other family of native bivalves are the Sphaeridae – pea clams or fingernail clams. The other bivalves found in Kansas are introduced species – the Asiatic clam Corbicula fluminea (Corbiculidae) and the Zebra mussel Dreissena polymorpha (Dreissenidae).

For more information specifically on Unionid mussels go to these great sources of information (Great Plains Nature Center and Fort Hays State University).

While the Unionids and the introduced species are well-known, other species of freshwater bivalves are less well-known. These include the Sphaerid clams, small “fingernail” size species.

The list of Kansas bivalves presented here includes the unionid mussels and two introduced species listed in the Guide to Kansas Freshwater Mussels (Miller, Couch, and Mason 2008, Great Plains Nature Center). The sphaerids are from a list of “other” mollusks in Kansas from Nature Serve Explorer (5/1/2015).
